Curious Cat Management Improvement Dictionary: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs - Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation. He explanded on the theory in his 1954 book Motivation and Personality.

For Maslow, each level must be met before you can build on the next. Without food you are focused on that not building esteem.

Physiological needs: food, water, air, etc.

Safety needs: physical security, financial security, health, etc.

Love and belonging: friendship, family, intimacy, etc.

Esteem: self respect and the respect of others.

And for Maslow the hierachy culminates in self-actualization, where you succeed in becoming what you want to become, what you have the potential to become.
