You might wonder why the petrified tree is surrounded by a fence? The park service put up the fence because another Petrified tree was reduced to nothing as people took pieces of it home over the years. Luckily this strategy seems to be working though now we all have to look at it through iron bars. It is a shame that some people fail to act in ways that will allow future generations to enjoy some of the wonders in the national parks.
